Acute Appendicitis in Pre-school Age Group and School Age Group



Abstract
A retrospective study is made on 346 cases of acute appendicitis in children under the age of fourteen, who treated during the period of 11 years from March, 1981 through February, 1992.
@ES Following results were obtained:
@EN 1) The incidence of acute appendicitis in children among the overall patients with appendicitis operated during the same period was 14.2%.
The incidence of pre-school age group(under the age 6 years) were 57 cases916.5%) and the school age group(age between 7-14 years) were 289 cases(83.5%).
2) Mean duration of symptoms of the pre-school age group were 2.4 days and that of the school age group were 1.5 days.
3) The incidence of perforated cases of the pre-school age were 56.1%and that of the shcool age group were 26.3%.
4) The most common symptoms of the pre-school age group were vomiting, RIQ pain and fever in the order of frequency and that of the school age group showing RLQ pain, anorexia, nausea, vomiting.
5) In pre-school age group, the cases through barium enema were 24.6% and were 92.9% and were 92.9% in sensitivity.
In school age group, the cases through barium enema were 9.7% and were 93.3% in sensitivity.
6) Barium enema was helpful to confirm the diagnosis in doubtful cases but not valuable to differentiate the perforated group from nonperforated one.
7) The complication rate of the pre-school age group was 28.1% and the school age group was 10.4%.
The overall complication rate was 13.3%.
